On August 13, 2020 at approximately 5:44 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a crash involving an automobile and a bicyclist at the intersection of North Nevada Avenue and Mount View Lane. The responding officers found the bicyclist, 62 year old Dennis Thompson of Colorado Springs, was suffering from serious injuries. Mr. Thompson was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of those injuries. The Major Crash Team responded and assumed the investigation into this matter.
On August 26, 2020, Mr. Thompson died as a result of the injuries he suffered in this crash. The investigation revealed a northbound Chevrolet sedan was proceeding through the intersection under a green light when it struck the bicyclist who attempting to cross the intersection, eastbound.
The bicyclist did not have the right of way. Neither excessive speed nor impairment are factors in this crash and no charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the Chevrolet who was not injured in this crash. Mr. Thompson is the 28th fatality in Colorado Springs this year. He is the second bicycle related fatality of 2020, as well. At this time in 2019, there were 30 fatalities.
