On October 1, 2020, at approximately 7:17 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a shots fired call for service in the 300 block of University Drive. When patrol officers arrived on scene, they located two adult males with apparent gunshot wounds. The first individual was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where he was pronounced deceased. The second individual was also transported to a hospital but with non-life threatening injuries. Detectives from the CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
On October 2, 2020, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the deceased adult male. The male was identified as 38-year-old Jerome Nelson of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination, this death is being investigated as a homicide and continues to be an active investigation. Further details may be released in the future as appropriate.
Mr. Nelson’s death is the 27th homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2020. The CSPD investigated 17 homicides at this time last year.
