Update
On October 5, 2020 the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsies of the deceased adults found on October 3, 2020 near the Edmundson trail head. The female has been identified as 72-year-old Stella Vigil of New Mexico. Mrs. Vigil’s death has been ruled a homicide. The male was identified as 73-year-old Leroy ‘Lee’ Vigil of New Mexico. Mr. Vigil’s death was ruled a suicide. Through the course of the investigation, detectives obtained evidence that supported an agreement between Mr. and Mrs. Vigil to end their lives together.
Mrs. Vigil’s death is the 29th homicide investigation in the city of Colorado Springs in 2020. The CSPD investigated 17 homicides at this time last year.
Original Release
On October 3, 2020 at 8:30 PM. The Colorado Springs Police Department Communications Center received a phone call regarding potential missing elderly adults who were last known to be hiking near the Edmundson trail head, 306 East Woodmen Road.
Family members and Officers responded to the area of the trail head and located the vehicle associated with the missing at-risk adults. Ultimately the El Paso County Search and Rescue assisted officers in conducting a search for the individuals and they were subsequently found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds at approximately 12:24 AM on Saturday, October 3, 2020 adjacent to Fountain Creek just off of the Santa Fe Trail. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Homicide/Assault Unit responded to assume control of the investigation.
CSPD is not looking for any suspects and have identified all persons involved in this incident. There is no danger to the community and detectives do not anticipate any arrests as a result of this investigation.
